Additionally, ensuring your windows are properly shut and installing sufficient insulation. Heating and cooling can take up around 47 percent of your energy usage — so taking care of those things can add up to immense amounts of savings.

How you ever been driving down the highway only to see a truck hauling what looks like a giant, skinny airplane wing? Perhaps you know already know what it is. Maybe you don’t. Chances are what you’ve seen being hauled is a windmill blade. While windmills certainly look giant even from a distance, seeing just one of these blades up close can be quite overwhelming. They can be up to 100 feet long! At Olympus Energy we’ve always been fascinated by windmills.

Windmills or wind turbines are impressively gigantic means of harnessing wind power. As an Edmonton power company we have a lot of interest in energy and how it’s produced. In this blog post we are going to look into windmills and they energy they provide.

How do windmills work?

Two of the best things about wind power are the eco-friendliness and the fact that it’s a renewable resource — the earth is constantly producing wind.

Windmills are based upon a simple concept. Wind blows and generates the energy to turn two or three propeller-like blades. The blades are connected with what’s a called a hub to form the rotor. From there the rotor is connected to a gear box, which is then connected to a generator.

Additionally, windmills usually have built in controls to start when the wind reaches a certain speed. They also shutdown when the winds reach high speeds to prevent damage. Windmills even have wind vanes designed to turn toward the wind when it comes from a different direction.

Interesting fact: wind is actually a form of solar energy.

Small Steps to Maximize Your Energy Savings

 

When it comes to resolutions we tend to go big — lose 20 pounds in a month or cutting out alcohol for a year. These big ambitions are courageous and well-intentioned but sometimes you have to start small, and that is how you maximize your energy saving goals! Below are some of the best tips and techniques we’ve learned in all of our years as energy suppliers.

 

Energy Conservation Tip #1 – Reconsider dish duty!

 

A dishwasher uses a good deal of water and electricity and sometimes we forget this because it was a long day at work, and we just want to load the dishes and relax. To save energy, consider hand washing your dishes every other load you would normally turn to use the dishwasher. Even air drying your dishes in lieu of using your dishwasher’s drying cycle can cut the energy usage up to 50 percent.

 

If you do hand wash dishes, don’t leave the water running. Fill the sink and let the dishes soak, give them a good scrub, and then rinse them with clean water.

Energy Conservation Tip #2 – Slowly raise the temperature in your home!

You all have been there — a large snowstorm hits and you return to your home after a long day at work and crank the heat! When you rapidly try and raise the temperature, it uses more energy trying to get up to the temperature. If you can, keep raising your home’s temperature by a couple of degrees in a slower manner to maximize your energy savings. 

Energy Conservation Tip #3 – Keep the oven door closed!

For all of those impatient chefs out there, keep your oven door closed while cooking! Every time you open the door, you can lose up to 25 degrees — not only are you wasting energy, but the lost heat may also impact the final outcome of what you’re cooking. Instead, use the oven light and switch it on to check on your food.

 

Energy Conservation Tip #4 – Replace well-loved fixtures.

 

There are certain rooms that we use the most — choose the five most used fixtures in your home and replace them or the light bulbs with energy saving products such as LED light bulbs, and then slowly and gradually, replace all the light bulbs in your home to really begin to see energy savings.  

 

Energy Conservation Tip #5 – Air dry your clothes!

 

In warmer weather, invest in a laundry line and hang your clothes outside, and in the cooler months use it inside to air dry your clothes. It may take a little more effort, but the energy you conserve makes an impact.

 

If you simply can’t air dry clothes, find an energy efficient dryer to better save energy.

 

Energy Conservation Tip #6 – Lower the temperature setting on your hot water heater.

 

Reduce your hot water heater’s temperature to around 48 degrees Celcius to really begin to see an impact on your monthly utilities. Another great tip is to turn off your hot water heater when you go out of town — this way you’re not paying to heat it and it warms up in about an hour when you turn it back on.

 

Taking small steps toward energy conservation is as simple as committing to a few, minor changes. You don’t have to completely uproot what you’re doing — you just have to become more mindful of how you use energy. Begin by picking and choosing what makes sense for your life and you’ll begin to see changes in your utilities and even save money.

Today we’re going to talk about how electricity moves from beginning to end. From how it’s generated to how it makes it to your home or business. First things first…

You may have heard of AC currents (which stands for active currents). AC current is one in which the flow of electricity goes one way and back the other way. AC power is what makes our houses or business go, so to speak. Many of the appliances, tools, computers, etc. we use on daily basis wouldn’t be able to function without it.

Without AC currents, powering our day-to-day lives would be a lot more expensive, if it were even possible. The reason we use AC currents is because, unlike DC currents (or direct currents), AC currents allow the use of a transformer.

In order to reach your home, power plants send out AC currents at high voltage rates, which allow it to travel quickly. However, if the current was to enter your home, go through your walls, and into your appliances at that high a voltage, you’d have a big problem. That’s where the transformer comes in. Before the current enters your home, it is “transformed” to a lower voltage, thus allowing you to run electric-powered items safely and efficiently.  

From the power plant to your home

Now that we’ve covered a little about what sort of power your home or work uses, let’s dive into each step of the process.

Generation:

There are many ways in which electricity is generated. It can come from wind (i.e. windmills), water (i.e. hydroelectric plants like dams), coal, or even biomass (i.e. burning food or yard waste). Generators then sell their electricity at a wholesale for a set price per hour.

Transmission:

We mostly covered the transmission of electricity above, but it’s worth noting that electricity does not go straight from the generators into homes. It travels across high-voltage transmission lines to local substations. These substations are likely the images your mind conjures up as you think about electricity and where it comes from as you’ve probably seen one near your house or place of work.  

Distribution:

This is where transformers come in. From substations, the electricity voltage is lowered — your home typically uses 240 and 120-volt outlets that are then sent to your home.
