Generation
Whether your electricity comes from coal, natural gas, wind, hydro or biomass, there is a generator out there producing this energy for your needs. Sometimes our power supply is supplemented by importing power from other provinces and the United States. Each generator sells their energy on the wholesale electricity market. The wholesale price for electricity is set each hour.
Transmission
After being generated, electricity travels across high-voltage transmission lines to local substations. Some of these companies are: ATCO, EPCOR and ENMAX.
Distribution
From the substations the electricity travels over lower-voltage distribution lines. This voltage is then reduced to 240/120 volts before it enters your home or business.

What electricity rate plans does Olympus Energy offer?
We offer a variable rate (based on spot market price plus a fixed margin), and fixed rate options for 1, 2, or 3 years. Each plan includes no sign-up fees and a monthly admin fee per metered site.
Who is responsible for power outages or line maintenance?
Physical line maintenance and outage response are handled by your local wire service provider (WSP) — such as ATCO, EPCOR, or ENMAX — not your electricity retailer. Call your WSP directly for outage issues.
Can I switch my electricity provider at any time?
Yes. In Alberta’s deregulated market you can switch electricity providers at any time. Olympus Energy’s variable rate plan has no cancellation fees, making it easy to switch without penalty.
Is Olympus Energy available in rural Alberta?
Olympus Energy serves most of Alberta. However, electricity services are not available in Rural Electrification Associations (REAs). Contact us to confirm service availability at your specific address.
