How Natural Gas Works in Alberta
Understanding how natural gas gets to your home or business can help you make confident decisions about your energy plan. Here’s how it works in Alberta:
Source
Gas reservoirs are tapped into and natural gas is removed through processing plants. The gas is then gathered and transported to the transmission pipeline.
Transmission
High-pressure pipelines deliver natural gas to power plants, industries, utilities, and export systems, managed by NOVA Gas, ATCO Gas, and Alliance Pipeline.
Distribution
Connected to the high-pressure pipelines, local distribution pipelines transport the natural gas to your home or business.
Retailer
This is where Olympus Energy comes in to market the natural gas to you and your family. Offering no contracts and great service!

Frequently Asked Questions
How does natural gas delivery work in Alberta?
Natural gas is extracted, transmitted through high-pressure pipelines managed by companies like NOVA Gas and ATCO Gas, then distributed through local lines to your home. Olympus Energy markets the commodity to you as your retail natural gas provider.
What natural gas rate plans are available?
Olympus Energy offers a variable rate plan (spot price plus a fixed margin) and a fixed rate plan. The variable rate has historically provided the best long-term value. The fixed rate is ideal for commercial clients seeking cost predictability.
Is natural gas available throughout Alberta?
We serve most Alberta homes and businesses. However, natural gas service is not available in Co-operative service areas or Medicine Hat, which operates its own municipal utility. Contact us to confirm availability at your address.
Who handles gas leaks or pipeline emergencies?
Gas emergencies such as leaks or pipeline issues are handled by your local gas distribution company (e.g., ATCO Gas), not your retailer. If you smell gas, leave the building immediately and call ATCO Gas or 911.
Can I bundle natural gas with my electricity through Olympus Energy?
Yes. You can manage both your electricity and natural gas through Olympus Energy for the convenience of a single provider and simplified billing. Contact us or sign up online to bundle both services.
